Flash game development on Unix

Geometry Wars

I have been wandering in the videogame wilderness for too long!.. then WOW! I discovered Geometry Wars 2 and have started thinking hmm – what I need is a toolchain and framework that is powerful enough to do cool things but with a shallow learning curve.. iphone/android dev fits the first part, but not the second…

So it was with some interest that I read about the release of Flixel – a Flash/Actionscript game engine – over at the excellent Digital Tools blog. After reading the blurb, and looking at the great ‘hello world’ game produced using Flixel, I thought.. ok – lets find out what I need to get this setup on my Ubuntu laptop.. a couple of hours later – success!..  a command-line actionscript 3 compiler installed, the Flixel game engine setup and the sample programs successfully installed…

The best instructions I found are here – the tip to fix the DOS newlines in the shell script was a life-saver! Once I had mxmlc installed and running, installing Flixel was a breeze – download, unpack and compile – no problems.

Yeehaa!.. this could be the start of a beautiful friendship!
